Two cargos against Gibraltar

Europa Point is a famous cape, recognizable for its beautiful Lighthouse and because it is the southernmost point of Gibraltar. On a clear day, from there you can appreciate views of North Africa. Yesterday however it has been the background of a dramatic shipwreck. A Liberian cargo ship named 'Fedra' ran aground exactly against the cliffs under the Lighthouse, and broke in two parts. Despite the efforts of two tug boats to hold the ship clear of land, its anchor broke in a force 8 gale and the stern of the 35,000 tonne vessel smashed against rocks at Europa Point. British and Spanish helicopters and sea vessels rescued all 31crew members during the heavy storm amid winds of up to 83km per hour, which forced the 24 year old ship against the cliffs of the Gibraltar coastline.

In the meanwhile, a few miles afar, in Algeciras on the other side of the Gibraltar gulf, the same storm battered another Liberian cargo named 'Tawe', hurling it against the shoreline too:

    Excellent view of the lighthouse and accident, up close and almost fatal for the crew. Beautiful place, too bad storms are natural occurrence
